November, also known as Movember, is recognised as men’s mental health month, where many men across the UK grow a moustache throughout the month to help start conversations and raise money. It is an important month where many organisations raise awareness about the mental health challenges faced by men to encourage support all year round.
There is no doubt that mental health is important for everyone, but it is shocking that there is still a stigma around men’s mental health in particular. A lot of men still find it difficult to open up about their mental health and feel it is expected for them to hide their emotions and ‘man up’ when they are struggling. This is why it is so significant to raise awareness and support the men in your life to help break down the stigma.
Some statistics:
- In 2021, compared to 51.7% of women – only 40% of men receive support from mental health Services
- 60 men are lost to suicide globally, every hour.
- Men’s suicide rates are 4x higher than female suicide rates
- 80% of all suicides are men
- Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under the age of 50 in the UK
