🌼 March – Endometriosis Awareness Month 🌼
March is dedicated to raising awareness about endometriosis—a condition affecting 1 in 10 women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals worldwide. By increasing understanding and support, we can help those living with this often invisible yet life-altering disease.
💛 What is Endometriosis? 💛
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the womb, causing severe pain, inflammation, and complications such as infertility.
Causes & Risk Factors
Endometriosis is the second most common gynaecological condition in the UK—yet it remains underfunded and under-researched. The exact cause remains unknown, but common symptoms to look out for are:
🔸 Debilitating period pain 🔸 Heavy or irregular bleeding 🔸 Pain during or after sex 🔸 Painful bowel movements or urination (especially during periods) 🔸 Severe bloating 🔸 Chronic fatigue🔸 Difficulty conceiving
Getting Diagnosed
Misdiagnosis is common taking an average of 8 years and 10 months to receive a diagnosis in the UK. Early intervention is key—don’t wait!
The symptoms of endometriosis can be subtle and often overlap with other conditions, making it difficult for healthcare providers to identify it right away.
Regular check-ups, second opinions, and being proactive in seeking tests like pelvic exams, ultrasounds, MRIs, and laparoscopy can make a huge difference in identifying the condition and starting treatment earlier.
🌿 Managing Endometriosis
There’s no cure, but symptoms can be managed through: Pain relief – Ibuprofen, naproxen, or prescription meds. Hormonal therapy – Birth control pills, IUDs, or other treatments. Surgery – Laparoscopy to remove excess tissue. Lifestyle changes – Diet, exercise, and stress management
🤰 Endometriosis & Fertility
Up to 50% of women with infertility have endometriosis. Fertility struggles deserve attention and support!
This condition can cause scar tissue, inflammation, and hormonal imbalances, making conception more difficult. However, treatments like laparoscopy, hormone therapy, and IVF can improve the chances of pregnancy.
